kumamoto castle
Kumamoto Castle is located in the centre of Kumamoto City.
It was constructed over seven years from 1601 to 1607.
The castle buildings are recognized as National Important Cultural Property and One of the three premier castles in Japan.
built for fortification
Another highlight of the castle’s fortifications is the "musha-gaeshi" (translated as "warrior-repellent walls").
These walls have a steep, curving design that makes it incredibly difficult for attackers to climb.
Kumamoto Castle was constructed in the city center, ensuring that residents have always had a view of it.
The castle is not just a cultural landmark but also holds a special place in their hearts.
Kumamoto Castle stands out as a prime example of a well-fortified stronghold.
Designed by the first feudal lord of Kumamoto, Kato Kiyomasa, this castle showcases his exceptional skills in castle-building.
Two stone walls in the castle were built to create an underground passage for escape.
restoration from earthquakes
In 2016, the Kumamoto Earthquake caused extensive damage to the castle, including the collapse of stone walls at fifty locations and damage to all 33 structures within the castle grounds.
The restoration of the castle is expected to be completed by 2037. There's still quite a journey ahead until then.
Even though the castle is still undergoing restoration work, you can still enjoy its sights.
The main castle has recently reopened, allowing visitors to explore both its interior and its impressive fortification techniqe
I won't deny it's sad not being able to see the castle from my childhood anymore. I still remember walking around those stone walls with my friends and family, coming here for picnics. The castle was always there.
But I'm really glad to know that despite the massive earthquakes, this city's symbol didn't completely crumble and still stands proudly.
The castle has grand unveiling! information can be found here
